Markdown to PDF guide
Markdown is easy to write but awkward to share with people who don't use it. A PDF looks the same on every device and prints cleanly. This tool lays your Markdown out like a typeset document.
The basics
Instead of taking a screenshot of a web page, the tool lays out your document as real PDF text. This gives sharp printing, small files and text you can select.
Your Markdown is read with a GitHub-flavoured Markdown parser.
Each element gets print typography: a clear heading scale, comfortable line spacing and shaded code.
Text flows across pages with margins, page numbers and sensible page breaks.
The finished PDF is saved by your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
What carries over
How each part of your Markdown is set on the page.
| Markdown | In the PDF | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| # Headings | Six-step type scale | Kept with the next paragraph so they never end a page. |
| Paragraphs & emphasis | 10.5 pt body text | Bold, italic, strikethrough and inline code are kept. |
| Lists & task lists | Bullets, numbers, checkboxes | Nested levels indent. Task lists show ticked or empty boxes. |
| Tables | Ruled table | Shaded header that repeats on each page. Rows never split. Alignment is kept. |
| ``` Code blocks | Shaded monospace block | Indentation is exact. Blocks up to 40 lines are kept on one page. |
| > Blockquotes | Ruled, muted quote | A thin left rule with italic text. |
| Links & footnotes | Clickable links, numbered notes | Footnotes are gathered in a Notes section at the end. |
| | Embedded PNG/JPEG | Scaled to fit the page width. |
Use cases
Whenever the reader shouldn't need a Markdown viewer.
Write in Markdown, then send a polished PDF to a client or manager.
Turn a README or runbook into a document for people outside the team.
Print notes, checklists and handouts with proper margins and page breaks.
Save a Markdown answer from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini as a tidy PDF.
Keep your CV in Markdown and export a PDF whenever you apply.
Keep a fixed copy of notes and meeting minutes that won't change.
Set expectations
It's built for clear, readable documents rather than custom page design.
Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew and emoji characters aren't in the PDF font yet.
Fonts, colours and page design are fixed. There's no CSS or theme support.
HTML is reduced to its text. Maths and Mermaid diagrams stay as plain code.
Need an editable file instead of a PDF? Use Markdown to Word, then adjust the layout in Word.
Common questions
Quick answers about turning Markdown into PDF files.
Type or paste Markdown into Step 1, or open a .md file or the built-in example. Check the live preview, then in Step 2 choose A4 or US Letter and press Download PDF. The file is saved straight to your downloads folder.
No. The PDF is laid out and saved inside your browser tab, so your Markdown stays on your device. If your Markdown links to images on other websites, your browser downloads those images to place them in the PDF, just as it would to show them.
Yes. The PDF contains real text, not a picture of the page, so you can search it, select and copy from it, and screen readers can read it. Links stay clickable.
Headings are kept with the text that follows them, so a heading never ends a page on its own. Code blocks of up to 40 lines move to the next page whole instead of splitting. Table rows never split across pages, and the header row repeats at the top of each new page.
Choose A4 (210 × 297 mm) or US Letter (8.5 × 11 in). The tool picks the usual size for your region to start with. Every page has 2 cm (about 0.8 in) margins, and documents longer than one page get page numbers.
GitHub-flavoured Markdown: headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, links, nested bulleted and numbered lists, task lists, tables with column alignment, fenced code blocks, blockquotes, horizontal rules, footnotes and images (PNG and JPEG).
The PDF font covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic alphabets. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Indic scripts and most emoji aren't included yet. For those, convert to Word with our Markdown to Word tool and save as PDF from Word.
PDFs here can include PNG and JPEG images. Images on websites that don't allow other pages to use them can't be fetched, so they appear as a link with the image's alt text. Other formats such as SVG, GIF and WebP also become a link.
Code blocks are set in a monospace font on a shaded background with spacing and indentation preserved exactly, but without colour highlighting. That keeps them readable on any printer, including black and white.
Make as many PDFs as you like, with no sign-up. Markdown files can be up to 10 MB, and documents of a few hundred pages are fine. Very long documents take a few seconds to build.
