Markdown table guide
Markdown tables are everywhere: in READMEs, wikis, notes and AI answers. But you can't sort, filter or sum them. This converter turns them into a real Excel workbook in one step.
The basics
The converter reads your Markdown with a proper parser, so escaped pipes, inline formatting and tables nested in lists are handled correctly.
Every GitHub-flavoured Markdown table in your text is found, wherever it sits.
Formatting characters are stripped from cells, so only the text and numbers remain.
Header rows are bolded, alignment is applied and column widths are fitted.
A standard .xlsx workbook, one sheet per table, is built and saved by your browser.
What carries over
How each part of a Markdown table turns up in the spreadsheet.
| Markdown | In Excel | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Header row | Bold first row | Optionally frozen so it stays visible while you scroll. |
| | :-- | :-: | --: | | Left, centre, right | Columns without colons keep Excel's default alignment. |
| Plain numbers | Number cells | Leading-zero codes and formatted values stay as text. |
| **bold**, `code`, [links](…) | Plain text | Markdown markers are removed and the text is kept. |
| \| escaped pipes | | in the cell | Unescaped correctly, never splitting a cell. |
| Several tables | Several sheets | Named after the heading above each table. |
Use cases
Whenever a table needs sorting, filtering, charts or formulas.
Turn a comparison table from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini into a sheet you can work with.
Pull reference tables out of documentation for analysis or sharing.
Send Markdown report tables to colleagues who live in Excel.
Move stock, price and SKU lists from notes into a spreadsheet.
Turn action and decision tables into a trackable sheet.
Sort and de-duplicate rows that were kept in a Markdown file.
Set expectations
Markdown tables are simple, so a few spreadsheet features have nothing to come from.
Markdown has no merged cells, so neither does the output.
Cells are values only. Text like =SUM(A1:A3) is saved as text, never run.
1,200, $5 and 45% stay as text so nothing is misread. Convert them in Excel if needed.

Common questions
Quick answers about converting Markdown tables to Excel spreadsheets.
Paste Markdown that contains one or more tables into Step 1, open a .md file, or press Load example. Every table found is listed with a preview. In Step 2, name the file and press Download .xlsx. Each table becomes its own sheet.
Yes. Paste a whole document and every table in it is found, including tables inside quotes and lists. Each becomes a separate sheet, named after the nearest heading above it, or Table 1, Table 2 and so on if there isn't one.
No. The tables are read and the workbook is built inside your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded or stored, so it's safe for prices, stock levels and customer data.
Plain numbers such as 124, -3 or 6.40 are saved as real numbers, so SUM and AVERAGE work straight away. Values that might lose meaning as numbers stay as text exactly as typed: codes with leading zeros like 007, and formatted values like 1,200, $5 or 45%.
Yes. Columns marked :-- are left-aligned, :-: centred and --: right-aligned in Excel. Columns without a colon use Excel's default: text on the left, numbers on the right.
Each column is sized to fit its longest value, like Excel's AutoFit, with a sensible minimum and maximum so very long cells don't make huge columns.
A Markdown table needs a header row followed by a separator row of dashes, such as | --- | --- |, with each row on its own line. Tables pasted from a chat app sometimes lose the separator row or join rows together. Add the separator row back and the table is found straight away.
The formatting characters are removed and the text is kept: **Dana** becomes Dana, and [site](https://…) becomes site. Escaped pipes (\|) become a normal | character in the cell.
Yes. Upload the .xlsx to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets, or use File › Import in an open sheet. Each table arrives on its own tab.
There's no daily cap and no account. Markdown files can be up to 10 MB, which is tens of thousands of rows.
