Excel to Markdown guide
Writing a Markdown table by hand means counting pipes and dashes. This converter does it for you from any sheet, with special characters escaped so the table never breaks.
The basics
The spreadsheet is read in your browser with SheetJS, a widely used spreadsheet library, then each row is written out as a Markdown table row.
Your workbook or CSV is read on your device. Every sheet is listed.
Cells are taken as displayed in the sheet, so formats like dates and percentages are kept.
Empty rows and columns are removed, and special characters in cells are escaped.
A GitHub-flavoured Markdown table is written, with optional padding and number alignment.
What carries over
What each part of a sheet becomes in the Markdown table.
| In the spreadsheet | In Markdown | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| First row | Header row | Or a generated Column 1, Column 2 header if your sheet has none. |
| Number columns | Right-aligned (---:) | Optional. Applies when every value in the column is a number. |
| Formatted values | As displayed | Dates, currency and percentages keep their look. |
| | in a cell | \| | Escaped so it never splits the cell. |
| Line breaks in a cell |
| Markdown table rows must stay on one line. |
| Formulas | Calculated results | The value is used, not the formula. |
| Several sheets | Choose one at a time | Hidden sheets are listed and marked. |
Use cases
Put spreadsheet data wherever Markdown is read.
Add price lists, specs and comparison tables to GitHub, GitLab or a docs site.
Paste test results or data summaries into a ticket as a readable table.
Give ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini a table as text, which they read more reliably.
Bring data into Notion, Obsidian, Confluence or any Markdown notes app.
Post tidy tables on Discord, Reddit and Stack Overflow, which all support Markdown.
Publish spreadsheet data on Hugo, Jekyll, Astro or Next.js pages.
Set expectations
Markdown tables are deliberately simple, so some spreadsheet features have nowhere to go.
Colours, fonts, borders and cell styles are dropped.
The value appears in the first cell; the others are left empty.
Tables with many columns are hard to read in Markdown. Consider splitting them.
Going the other way? Markdown Table to Excel turns pipe tables back into a workbook.
Common questions
Quick answers about converting Excel and CSV files to Markdown tables.
Choose or drop your .xlsx or .csv file in Step 1, or paste cells you've copied from Excel or Google Sheets. Pick the sheet you want if the workbook has several. The Markdown table appears in Step 2, ready to copy or download as a .md file.
No. Your workbook or CSV is read inside your browser tab and never leaves your device. The page doesn't keep a copy, so refreshing clears it.
Excel .xlsx, .xlsm and older .xls workbooks, OpenDocument .ods, and .csv and .tsv text files, up to 10 MB. You can also skip the file and paste cells copied from Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice.
Every sheet in the workbook is listed in the Sheet menu. Choose one to convert it, then copy or download the result. Choose the next sheet to do the same for that one. Hidden sheets are listed too, and marked as hidden.
Untick First row is the header. A Markdown table must have a header row, so the tool adds one (Column 1, Column 2, and so on) and keeps your first row as data. You can rename the headers in the output before copying.
They're escaped, so a | inside a cell stays part of that cell instead of starting a new column. Characters that Markdown would treat as formatting, such as * and _, are escaped too, and line breaks inside a cell become
.
Yes. Excel files are converted using the values as they're displayed in the sheet, so 45% stays 45% rather than 0.45 and dates keep their format. CSV values are kept exactly as written in the file.
Formulas become their calculated results. Markdown tables have no colours, fonts, borders or merged cells, so those are dropped. A merged cell's value appears in its first cell.
Columns where every value is a number are right-aligned (---:) so figures line up, like they do in a spreadsheet. Untick Right-align number columns to keep everything left-aligned.
It pads cells with spaces so the pipes form neat columns when you read the Markdown as plain text. It doesn't change how the table looks when rendered. Turn it off for the shortest possible output.
